Chapter 16

“Bad.” Isach sighed. “Worse than my father and Ivy combined.”

I muttered a string of curses, raked my fingers through my hair, and paced the length of the living room, my steps heavy. I knew from experience that blood oaths were nothing to joke about, and not something to be entered into lightly, but Piper never swore an oath—her father had, and her being bound by that wasn’t fair.

“This isn’t a fight we can win by brute force. We need to be strategic and patient about it,” Isach said. He crossed his arms and pinned me with a knowing look.

I scowled. “I already said I wouldn’t go in guns blazing, but I’m not going to stop, either. Not until I have Piper and all of her sister back here safely.”

“I won’t stop, either,” Chloe said, looping her arm through Trent’s and resting her head on his shoulder. “So, what’s the plan, Isach? What do we have to do?”

I gave Chloe a grateful smile, and she returned the gesture. Knowing I had her, my entire family, and a coven of witches on my side eased some of my fears.

“For starters, we need to follow the rules.” Isach glanced around the room. “The royal council goes back centuries, and every royal coven is rooted in rules and traditions. The only way we’ll get close enough to Piper is to jump into witch politics headfirst.”

“How are we supposed to do that?” Abby asked.

That was a damn good question, and the house fell silent as we waited for Isach’s answer. I stopped pacing and stood near Colt and my father, both of whom were unusually tense, probably because we were standing in house full of witches. Our history with the former Rose Coven wasn’t exactly ideal.

“In order for me to answer that, I need to explain how Piper and her sisters ended up in this situation and why their involvement with the royal coven is so important.” Isach frowned, his tone wary. “Everyone better get comfortable. It’s going to be a long night.”

I groaned. The last thing I wanted was a crash course in witch history—I wanted answers about how we were going to save Piper and her sisters. I wanted a solid plan of action so that I could do something rather than stand around here talking.

“I’ll start some coffee,” Chloe said and moved into the kitchen.

“Please allow me to help.” Heaven Leigh joined Chloe in the kitchen.

I shifted on my feet, and Dad rested his hand on my shoulder. “Patience, son. We need to make sure we do this the right way.”

“Yeah, I know,” I grumbled.

I only wished the right way was right now, but I had a feeling whatever plan Isach had in mind was going to take a long time, and I wasn’t sure how long I’d be able to wait. Piper had only been gone an hour, and that felt like a lifetime.

Isach brought everyone up to speed on Piper’s family, how her father had tried to tame dragons,
